"God is unhappy with me for questioning things I used to just accept"
How it sounds in your head: I'm starting to wonder about things that don't make sense. I have questions about stories I learned in Sunday School. I don't just believe everything anymore like I used to. God probably doesn't like that I'm doubting.
"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings."
-- Proverbs 25:2Source: Religious systems that equate questions with rebellion, teaching that doubt equals distance from God.
Critical thinking is developing naturally, but she's been taught that faith means unquestioning acceptance. Normal cognitive development feels like spiritual backsliding.
Thomas said 'Unless I see and touch, I will NOT believe' - literally demanding physical proof. Jesus didn't rebuke him; He SHOWED UP and invited Thomas to touch His wounds, meeting the doubt with PRESENCE and evidence.
I REFUSE the lie that God is unhappy with my questions! IT IS WRITTEN that searching out matters is the GLORY of KINGS - and I'm a daughter of the KING! Thomas demanded proof and Jesus SHOWED UP to provide it! IT IS WRITTEN in Isaiah 1:18 - 'Come now, let us REASON TOGETHER!' God INVITES investigation, debate, wrestling! I stand in the BARAK blessing - Jacob WRESTLED WITH GOD all night and got BLESSED for it, not punished! The Father who named Jacob 'Israel' meaning 'struggles with God' celebrates my questions! He's big enough for my doubts and secure enough for my wondering!
The Father who made your mind to grow and question isn't threatened by your questions. He's the one who GAVE you critical thinking as a gift, and He's inviting you to a DEEPER faith that can handle complexity - not settling for a child's faith when you're ready for more.
