"God is punishing me through my child's choices—this is judgment for my past sins."
How it sounds in your head: Before I was saved, I lived that life too. My wild years. My rebellion. Maybe God is letting me experience what I put my own mother through. Maybe this is payback. Maybe my child's rebellion is the consequence of my past—reaping what I sowed decades ago.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religious teaching about generational curses and reaping/sowing applied as punishment, denying the finished work of the cross.
She sees parallels between her past rebellion and her child's current path. The similarities feel like cosmic judgment—like she's watching her own sins replay in the next generation.
Rahab was a prostitute and traitor to her own city, yet God not only saved her household but placed her in the direct lineage of Jesus Christ. Her past didn't curse her children—her son Boaz became a man of noble character, and she became great-grandmother to King David.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing me through my child. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven ALL trespasses and nailed every charge against me to the cross. My past sins are not cursing my child—they are BURIED IN THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA, remembered no more. IT IS WRITTEN in Colossians 2:13-14 that the handwriting against me was wiped out completely. Just as Rahab the prostitute became ancestor of kings despite her past, just as Ruth the Moabite was grafted into Israel's lineage despite pagan heritage, my child is not cursed by my history. Christ REDEEMED me from the curse of the law—every generational pattern, every stronghold, every consequence was paid for at Calvary. I stand in Romans 8:1—there is NO CONDEMNATION for me in Christ Jesus. My child's journey is not my judgment; it's their own story of God's relentless pursuit. The BARAK blessing breaks every curse.
The Father isn't keeping score of your past to punish you through your children—He threw your sins into the sea of forgetfulness and posted a 'No Fishing' sign. Your child's struggles are not your judgment; they're opportunities for God to display His redemptive power across generations.
