"God is punishing me for my past sins by allowing my child to rebel."
How it sounds in your head: You know what you did in your 20s, 30s, 40s. The affair, the drinking years, the anger, the things you never told anyone. You got right with God eventually, but now you wonder if this is the bill coming due. Maybe God forgave you positionally but is still exacting consequences through your child's suffering. Generational curse. You reap what you sow.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you ALL trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Old Covenant punishment theology mixed with generational curse teaching, denying finished work of cross.
You can draw a direct line from your sin to their pain—maybe you modeled the drinking, maybe the affair destabilized the home, maybe your anger created wounds. The pattern feels like divine mathematics: your sin = their consequence. Deuteronomy's generational curse warnings seem to describe your exact situation.
David committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband Uriah—then had multiple sons including Solomon who built the temple and was in the Messianic line. God said of David's sin: 'As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.' Murder and adultery didn't disqualify his lineage from blessing.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing me through my child's rebellion. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven me ALL trespasses and wiped out the handwriting against me—nailed it to the cross, REMOVED. I am not under curse; I am under the BARAK blessing by covenant, not behavior. IT IS WRITTEN that as far as east from west, He has removed my sin—it's not in the file, not being punished, not bearing fruit in my child's life. David the murderer and adulterer had blessed lineage. I stand in the righteousness of Christ, and my past is buried in the sea of forgetfulness. The blood speaks BETTER things than my sin ever could.
The Father isn't keeping a scorecard of your past to punish you through your children—He's already punished Jesus for every sin you committed. While you're connecting dots between your failures and their rebellion, He's running toward your prodigal with a robe that declares: 'This is MY child, and I make ALL things work together for good.'
