"God is disappointed I struggle with my mental health and can't just 'have more faith.'"
How it sounds in your head: I've prayed and prayed but I still have anxiety and depression. People say if I trusted God more it would go away. Maybe He's disappointed I'm not strong enough to believe my way out of this.
"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Source: toxic positivity teaching that equates mental illness with lack of faith or hidden sin.
Well-meaning Christians have implied her struggle is a spiritual failure, making her brain chemistry feel like a referendum on her relationship with God. Every bad day feels like evidence God is frustrated with her weakness.
Elijah had just called down fire from heaven, then immediately wanted to die from depression. God's response wasn't 'have more faith'—it was food, sleep, and gentle presence. God sent an angel with meals and let him rest, treating his mental health crisis with TENDERNESS, not disappointment.
I REFUSE the lie that mental illness disappoints God. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted, not distant or frustrated. My Father doesn't condemn my brain chemistry any more than He condemns my eye color. IT IS WRITTEN there is NO condemnation for those in Christ. He sent angels to feed DEPRESSED Elijah, not lectures about faith. I am covered by the BARAK blessing that protected Jacob even in his fear and anxiety. My mental health doesn't determine my righteousness—JESUS does. I am His BELOVED daughter in the dark AND the light.
Your Father sees you in the depression fog and He's running toward you with food, rest, and presence—not a sermon. He's already thrown the party because you're His daughter, serotonin levels and all.
