"God gave me this pain to keep me humble and dependent on Him."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe without this pain I'd become proud or self-sufficient. Maybe God knows I need this to stay close to Him. Paul had a thorn to keep him humble—maybe pain is mine. Maybe removing it would be spiritually dangerous for me.
"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
-- 2 Corinthians 3:17Religious misinterpretation of Paul's thorn, teaching that God authors suffering to prevent pride, old covenant thinking.
She's heard the 'thorn in the flesh' sermons applied to every ailment. The theological framework that God uses suffering to keep people humble is deeply embedded in church teaching, making pain feel like spiritual protection.
Walked on water in pride, sank in fear, Jesus immediately grabbed him and lifted him back up—didn't leave him sinking to 'teach him humility.' Denied Jesus three times, yet Jesus restored him completely and made him foundation of the church without permanent punishment.
I REFUSE the lie that God authors pain to keep me humble. IT IS WRITTEN: 'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is LIBERTY'—not bondage to suffering. IT IS WRITTEN: 'The Son has made you free, you are free INDEED.' Jesus HEALED to reveal the Father's nature—He didn't assign sickness as spiritual guardrails. I am Abraham's seed under the BARAK blessing that brings freedom, not affliction. Humility is knowing I'm righteous by GIFT, not achievement. My Father doesn't need to torture me to keep me close—His kindness leads me to Him.
Your Father doesn't keep you close through pain like a captor with chains—He draws you with kindness like a father with open arms. He's not afraid you'll run if He heals you; He's confident His goodness is magnetic enough to hold you without suffering as leverage.
