"God gave me this mental illness to teach me something I was too stubborn to learn."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe if I'd been more obedient earlier, more humble, more broken before God, I wouldn't have needed this suffering. He's using this depression to get my attention because I wouldn't listen any other way. This is His teaching tool.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
-- James 1:17Religious suffering theology made God the author of mental illness, as if He inflicts brain chemistry disorders to manufacture spiritual lessons.
She's heard countless testimonies where people said 'God used my suffering to teach me,' making her believe that resisting mental illness means resisting God's lesson plan. The narrative that suffering equals spiritual growth has been drilled into her for decades.
Disciples asked whose sin caused the man's blindness—his or his parents? Jesus said, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.' Then He immediately healed him. The condition wasn't a lesson—it was an opportunity for God's glory through healing.
I REFUSE the lie that God gave me mental illness to teach me a lesson. IT IS WRITTEN that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father, and mental illness is not a good gift. Jesus came to give abundant life, and depression is not abundant. I am Abraham's seed, covered by the BARAK blessing that includes health and wholeness. IT IS WRITTEN that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. My mental illness is not His curriculum—it's an opportunity for His healing power. The Father runs toward me with solutions, not suffering. I receive healing, knowing He delights in making me whole.
The Father didn't give you mental illness to teach you—He's heartbroken watching you suffer. He's running toward you with healing, not with a lesson plan that requires your pain. Every good gift comes from Him, and He's offering wholeness, treatment, hope, and breakthrough right now, exactly as you are.
