"God allowed this illness to teach me something. I need to figure out the lesson."
How it sounds in your head: There must be a reason. Maybe it's teaching you patience, or humility, or dependence on God. You search for the spiritual lesson hidden in the pain, afraid that if you don't learn it, you'll stay sick or waste the suffering.
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."
-- John 10:10Religion's toxic theology—making God the author of sickness and you the student who must earn a passing grade to get healing.
Well-meaning Christians say it constantly: 'God is teaching you.' 'There's a purpose in this.' It sounds spiritual and gives meaning to senseless suffering. The alternative—that it's just enemy attack—feels too simple or makes you wonder why God didn't stop it.
Disciples asked Jesus, 'Who sinned—this man or his parents—that he was born blind?' They wanted a LESSON, a reason. Jesus said, 'Neither—but that the works of God should be revealed.' Then He HEALED him immediately. No lesson required. Just glory.
I REFUSE to make God the author of my sickness. IT IS WRITTEN: the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came to give me ABUNDANT LIFE. Sickness is the thief's work, and I don't partner with the enemy by calling it God's teaching tool. IT IS WRITTEN that every good gift comes from the Father—sickness is NOT a gift. Jesus came to DESTROY the works of the devil, and sickness is on that list. I don't need to learn a lesson to earn healing; I need to RECEIVE what Jesus already finished. The BARAK blessing covers me—protected even when I don't understand, blessed even when I haven't 'figured it out.'
The Father isn't the one who made you sick to teach you patience. He's the One who sent Jesus to DESTROY sickness and give you abundant life. He's not waiting for you to pass the test—He's waiting to reveal His glory through your healing, no lesson required.
