"God allowed my eating disorder to teach me that my body isn't what matters—only my soul."
How it sounds in your head: I can't stop thinking about food, calories, my weight, how I look compared to everyone on Instagram. Maybe God let this spiral happen to show me I was too focused on appearance. Maybe the torture of obsessing over my body is His way of teaching me to care about 'inner beauty' instead. Maybe I was too vain and this is correction.
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."
-- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20Source: Religious dualism that pits body against soul, combined with toxic 'modest is hottest' purity culture that shames girls for caring about appearance.
The church narrative of 'don't focus on outward beauty' while she's drowning in comparison culture creates cognitive dissonance that makes the eating disorder feel like divine intervention. The obsession with her body DOES feel like slavery, so the lie that God orchestrated it to teach detachment from appearance seems like twisted logic that fits.
Mephibosheth was crippled in both feet, living in hiding, convinced he was worthless ('a dead dog'). King David sought him out, restored ALL his grandfather's land, gave him a permanent place at the king's table, and treated him like a son—not despite his broken body, but WITH his broken body, saying 'don't be afraid.' David (a picture of Jesus) valued him completely, body AND soul.
I REFUSE the lie that God authored my eating disorder to teach me my body is irrelevant. IT IS WRITTEN that my BODY is the temple of the Holy Spirit—He lives IN my physical body, which makes it sacred. Jesus healed bodies constantly because Father cares about physical wholeness. My eating disorder is not His curriculum; it's the enemy's torment, and IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED (John 8:36). I am Abraham's seed; the BARAK blessing covers my whole person—spirit, soul, AND body. I receive freedom from obsessive thoughts, peace with food, love for my body as Father's temple, and the health He already purchased. RIGHT NOW.
Your Father is not using disordered eating to teach you detachment—He's the One who gave you a body as His dwelling place and is ACHING to free you from the mental prison. He's not waiting for you to 'learn the lesson' first; He's already speaking freedom over you like He spoke light into darkness, and the only thing He's asking is that you believe He's as good as He says He is.
