"Forgiving myself would mean I'm excusing what I did"
How it sounds in your head: If you forgive yourself, you're saying it was okay. You're letting yourself off the hook. That's not accountability—that's making excuses. Real integrity means holding yourself responsible, and that means NOT forgiving yourself.
"Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us."
-- Romans 8:33-34Source: World's false definition of accountability—the enemy confusing conviction with condemnation, responsibility with self-punishment, and grace with excuses.
Because forgiveness and excusing seem like the same thing when you conflate acceptance with approval. Because you've seen people make excuses and call it grace, so refusing to forgive yourself feels like the opposite—real accountability.
This man was literally being executed for his crimes—the state deemed him worthy of death. He admitted 'we receive the due reward of our deeds.' He didn't excuse his sin, minimize it, or pretend it didn't happen. And Jesus IMMEDIATELY said 'Today you will be with Me in Paradise.' Acknowledging guilt and receiving forgiveness happened simultaneously. Full accountability, full grace, same moment.
I REFUSE the lie that forgiving myself means excusing sin. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:33-34 that God justifies me—the Judge Himself declares me righteous, and no other verdict matters. I'm not excusing what I did; I'm receiving what JESUS DID. IT IS WRITTEN that He is faithful and just to forgive—the sin was acknowledged AND paid for. I stand under the BARAK blessing where covenant love covered real sins—they weren't excused or minimized, they were COVERED by blood. I am a BRANCH in the VINE, and the sap flowing through me isn't denial of my failure but the LIFE of Jesus despite it. Accountability means agreeing with God's verdict, and He says FORGIVEN. I accept responsibility for my actions AND I accept His payment. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, not because I excuse sin but because He CONQUERED it.
The Father isn't asking you to pretend it didn't happen—He's asking you to believe that what Jesus did about it was enough. He's not offering you excuses; He's offering you His Son's blood, which fully addressed the sin you fully committed.
