"I need to prove I've changed before I can accept forgiveness for myself."
How it sounds in your head: You've said you're sorry before. You've promised to change before. Words are cheap—you need to show actual transformation over TIME before you can honestly say you're forgiven. Maybe a year of sobriety. Maybe consistent good behavior. Maybe when your kids finally trust you again. Then you'll have earned the right to forgive yourself.
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
-- Romans 5:8Religious works formula—makes forgiveness the REWARD for behavior change instead of the POWER for it.
Men operate on proof and results. 'Show, don't tell' is hardwired into your leadership DNA. Accepting forgiveness before demonstrating change feels like participation-trophy weakness, like grace for losers who can't perform.
Zacchaeus was a corrupt tax collector, actively stealing from his own people when Jesus called him down from the tree. Jesus declared 'salvation has come to this house' BEFORE Zacchaeus changed anything. The pronouncement of acceptance came FIRST; the transformation followed IMMEDIATELY because grace is the power to change.
I REFUSE the lie that I must prove change before receiving forgiveness. IT IS WRITTEN: While I was STILL a sinner, Christ died for me—not after I cleaned up, but WHILE I was a mess. Forgiveness is not my graduation gift—it's my STARTING LINE. IT IS WRITTEN: I am the righteousness of God in Christ RIGHT NOW, not after I prove anything. The BARAK blessing flows to me by COVENANT, and that blessing is the POWER to become who I'm called to be. I receive forgiveness NOW, and transformation follows because I'm connected to the VINE.
The Father isn't waiting at the finish line with forgiveness as your trophy. He's at the STARTING line, handing you forgiveness as your FUEL, because grace is what transforms you, not what you earn.
