"I need to keep punishing myself so I don't forget how bad I messed up."
How it sounds in your head: If I let myself off the hook, I'll just do it again. I need this weight to keep me in line. The pain is what keeps me humble and careful.
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."
-- Isaiah 53:5Performance religion taught you that ongoing punishment is proof of repentance, making you your own jailer.
You've seen people who seemed flippant about sin, and you don't want to be like that. Self-punishment feels like insurance against becoming calloused, like the pain proves you care.
Caught in the ACT of adultery, dragged before Jesus and the crowd, should have been stoned. Jesus said 'Neither do I condemn you'—no punishment, no probation period, just 'Go and sin no more' as a FREE woman.
I REFUSE the lie that I must be my own punisher as if the cross was insufficient. IT IS WRITTEN: 'The chastisement for our peace was upon HIM'—Jesus took ALL punishment so I could go free. I am not kept from sin by guilt but transformed by love. IT IS WRITTEN: 'There is NOW no condemnation'—not later when I've suffered enough, but NOW. I am Abraham's seed under the BARAK blessing, protected by covenant blood, not by my self-inflicted consequences. The Father didn't make the prodigal sleep in the servant quarters to 'learn his lesson'—He threw a party IMMEDIATELY. I declare the punishment is FINISHED and I am FREE.
The Father isn't impressed by your self-punishment—He's heartbroken that you're refusing the freedom His Son died to give you. He wants you at the feast, not locked in a prison you've built inside your own mind.
