"Church people smile at you but talk about your family behind your back."
How it sounds in your head: I hear what they say in the parking lot after service. They're friendly to our faces but gossiping about my parents' divorce, my brother's problems, our financial struggles. It's all fake niceness covering real judgment.
"Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases."
-- Proverbs 26:20Source: legitimate experience of religious gossip and judgment, creating walls that prevent genuine community and vulnerable connection.
He's overheard actual gossip or had it reported back to him, confirming his suspicion that church people are two-faced. The violation of trust when people discuss your private family matters is deep and real.
Many believed in Jesus's name when they saw His miracles, but Scripture says Jesus didn't commit Himself to them because He knew what was in man—He had discernment about who was trustworthy. He didn't isolate because of it; He just chose His inner circle wisely, proving you can have both boundaries and genuine community.
I REFUSE the lie that all church people are gossips who can't be trusted. IT IS WRITTEN that where there's no talebearer, strife ceases—I have authority to remove myself from gossips and connect with trustworthy people. Jesus had discernment about who to trust and so do I. The BARAK blessing protected Abraham even when others talked about his failures—covenant covers what gossips expose. IT IS WRITTEN that love covers a multitude of sins. I choose trustworthy community over isolation. I am discerning, protected, and connected to safe people.
While you're building walls because of gossips and backstabbers, the Father is running toward you saying, 'I have a tribe who'll guard your story like their own.' He's not asking you to be vulnerable with everyone—He's giving you discernment to find the few who are genuinely safe, and He's healing the wound of betrayed confidence.
