"Christians can't have demons, so if I'm struggling with dark thoughts, I must not be saved."

How it sounds in your head: I've been taught Christians can't be demon-possessed, so these tormenting thoughts must mean I was never truly saved. Maybe I didn't pray the right prayer. Maybe I'm fooling myself. Real Christians don't battle darkness like this.

1 John 5:12

"He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."

-- 1 John 5:12
Enemy whispers: Your struggle proves you're not really saved. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: 1 John 5:12—'He who has the Son HAS life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.' Do you have the Son? Then you HAVE LIFE. Present tense. The enemy attacks you BECAUSE you're saved, not because you're not. IT IS WRITTEN: Ephesians 6:12—we WRESTLE against principalities and powers. Wrestling is for believers. If you weren't a threat, the enemy wouldn't bother attacking. Your battle is PROOF you belong to the Kingdom.
Quick Truth: LIE: My struggle proves I'm not saved. TRUTH: 1 John 5:12—You HAVE the Son, you HAVE life. The battle proves you're a threat, not a fake.

Source: Religious teaching creating false dichotomy that leads to condemnation—if you struggle, you're either demon-possessed (and therefore not Christian) or not struggling (and therefore lying).

Why this feels true:

The spiritual battle feels too intense for someone who's supposed to be 'born again.' She wonders if true believers experience this level of warfare or if her struggle is proof she's outside God's family.

Acts 5:3
Peter after Pentecost

Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, walking in supernatural power, and yet asked Ananias, 'Why has SATAN filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?' Satan was actively working among Spirit-filled believers. The presence of spiritual attack doesn't negate the presence of the Spirit.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that my struggle with dark thoughts means I'm not saved. IT IS WRITTEN: 1 John 5:12—I HAVE the Son, therefore I HAVE LIFE. My salvation isn't based on the absence of warfare but on the PRESENCE of Jesus in me. IT IS WRITTEN: Ephesians 6:12—I wrestle against principalities and powers BECAUSE I am a believer, not because I'm not. The enemy attacks me because I'm a THREAT to his kingdom. I am sealed by the Holy Spirit, purchased by the blood of Jesus, and NOTHING can separate me from the love of God. The BARAK blessing of protection covers me—not because I'm perfect, but because I'm in COVENANT. Abraham lied, Jacob deceived, and God STILL protected them. How much more does the blood of Jesus protect ME?

But God actually:

The Father doesn't look at your battle and question your salvation—He looks at His Son's blood and declares you RIGHTEOUS. Like Peter, who was Spirit-filled and still dealing with satanic attacks among believers, your struggle doesn't disqualify you; it proves you're in the fight because you MATTER to the Kingdom.
