"My depression and anxiety prove demons are tormenting me because I'm not right with God."
How it sounds in your head: Christians aren't supposed to have depression. The fact that I wake up with this crushing weight, these panic attacks, this darkness—it must be demonic torment because of some unconfessed sin. Maybe I opened a door somewhere and demons got in.
"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God."
-- Psalm 42:11Source: Religious teaching that pathologizes mental health as spiritual failure, making her believe biochemical depression is demonic punishment for hidden sin.
Depression feels like spiritual darkness, not just sadness. The shame-based teaching she's heard for decades says real Christians have 'the joy of the Lord,' so if she doesn't feel joyful, something must be spiritually wrong.
Right after the greatest victory of his ministry, Elijah crashed into suicidal depression, praying to die: 'It is enough; now, O LORD, take my life.' God didn't rebuke him or cast out demons—He gave him SLEEP, FOOD, and gentle presence. Physical care, not deliverance ministry.
I REFUSE the lie that depression equals demonic torment or spiritual failure. IT IS WRITTEN that even David was 'cast down' in soul, and he was God's beloved. Depression is biochemical, not demonic. There is NO condemnation for those in Christ—not even for mental health struggles. IT IS WRITTEN that God is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. My brain chemistry doesn't cancel my covenant. I am the BARAK-blessed daughter, protected even when my neurotransmitters fail. God isn't mad at me for being depressed. He's NEAR me in it.
The Father sees your crushing depression and isn't calling it demonic—He's calling it human. While the church calls it spiritual warfare, He's whispering, 'Your brain is tired, beloved; come rest in Me, and let's get you some help.'
