"At my age I should be giving everything away, not accumulating or enjoying wealth myself."
How it sounds in your head: You're in the fourth quarter. This is when you're supposed to be thinking legacy, passing it down, sacrificing for the next generation. Spending on yourself now feels selfish. Shouldn't you be liquidating, downsizing, giving it all to the kids and grandkids? Dying with money in the bank is dying selfish.
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous."
-- Proverbs 13:22Religion's martyrdom teaching says later years should be total self-sacrifice, making personal enjoyment of God's provision seem selfish instead of covenant receiving.
You've spent your whole life providing, building, sacrificing for others. The transition from earner to retiree already feels like loss of purpose. Now the thought of spending on yourself instead of leaving it all to family feels like you're abandoning your role as provider. Real men pour out, give away, go without so others can have - right to the end.
At age 85, Caleb said 'Give me THIS MOUNTAIN' - not a rocking chair, not retirement, not downsizing. God kept him strong and he asked for MORE territory, MORE inheritance, MORE conquest. God honored the 85-year-old warrior who refused to shrink back, giving him the mountain and the strength to take it.
I REFUSE the lie that my age requires total self-depletion and sacrifice of personal enjoyment. IT IS WRITTEN that a good man leaves inheritance to his children's children - I can't leave what I don't have, and God's plan is multi-generational wealth flowing THROUGH me, not me emptying into poverty. IT IS WRITTEN that the righteous shall STILL bear fruit in old age and be fresh and flourishing - not depleted, not dried up, not apologetically shrinking. I am blessed with the barak of Abraham, which blessed him AND his descendants - I receive abundantly to enjoy AND to pass down. My Father runs toward me with abundance in every season, not a lecture about giving it all away.
Your Father didn't give the prodigal the inheritance and say 'now immediately give it to your brother.' He restored him FULLY - robe, ring, sandals, party - because sonship means receiving, not just distributing. You're a son in whom He delights, and He's still pouring out blessing for you to enjoy AND share, not deplete yourself to prove worthiness.
