"Your panic attacks and anxiety prove you don't really believe God is in control."
How it sounds in your head: You're in the middle of a panic attack - heart racing, can't breathe, convinced you're dying - and the shame hits as hard as the fear. If you REALLY trusted God, you wouldn't feel like this. If you REALLY believed He's sovereign, your body wouldn't betray you like this. The anxiety feels like a faith report card, and you're failing.
"Then He said to them, 'My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.'"
-- Matthew 26:38Religious lie equating physiological response with spiritual failure, making panic attacks a moral issue instead of a medical one.
The Bible talks about peace and not being anxious, and you're over here hyperventilating in the school bathroom. Other Christians quote 'fear not' like it's simple, while your nervous system is a war zone. It feels like proof your faith is defective.
Daniel, prophet who shut lions' mouths and interpreted dreams, had a vision that left him with no strength, face to the ground, trembling and speechless - a full physical panic response. The angel didn't rebuke him; he said 'you are greatly beloved' and strengthened him.
I REFUSE the lie that my panic attacks mean I don't trust God. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus Himself experienced crushing anxiety in Gethsemane - anxiety doesn't equal failed faith. The same Daniel who trusted God in the lions' den trembled and lost strength in God's presence - physical response doesn't measure spiritual reality. IT IS WRITTEN that I have the peace of God, not the absence of panic, but the PRESENCE of God IN the panic. The BARAK blessing covers my nervous system - I am blessed in the anxiety, blessed in the breakthrough, blessed coming in to the panic attack and blessed coming out of it, because covenant doesn't require perfect calm to remain in effect.
The Father doesn't watch you have a panic attack and shake His head in disappointment - He's right there WITH you in it, the same way the angel strengthened trembling Daniel and called him 'greatly beloved' in the middle of his physical response. Your anxiety doesn't change His affection.
