"Your mental health struggles are punishment for secret sin in your life."
How it sounds in your head: You've been fighting porn. You lost your temper and said things you regret. You've got that relationship you know isn't God's best. And now the depression feels like God's way of saying 'I'm done with you until you clean up.' Like He's withholding peace until you get it right.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."
-- Romans 8:1Religious karma teaching that repackages Old Covenant cause-and-effect as New Covenant reality, making mental illness a divine punishment.
You've heard sermons about 'unconfessed sin' blocking blessings, and you know you've got stuff you're struggling with. The depression feels like evidence that God's hand is against you until you fix yourself.
The prodigal blew his inheritance on prostitutes and came home smelling like pigs - maximum sin, maximum shame. The father didn't make him prove anything, didn't lecture, didn't withhold. He RAN to him, embraced him filthy, threw a party IMMEDIATELY.
I REFUSE the lie that my mental health is God punishing my failures. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ - none for my porn struggle, none for my temper, none for my relationship choices. Jesus took ALL punishment so I get ALL blessing. My depression isn't divine wrath - it's a broken part of living in a broken world, and my Father runs TOWARD me in it, not away. IT IS WRITTEN that while I was still a sinner, Christ died for me - which means He's not waiting for me to clean up to help me. The BARAK blessing that covered lying Abraham and deceiving Jacob covers me COMPLETELY, sin and struggle and all.
The Father isn't using your mental health as a punishment lever - He's not waiting for you to get cleaned up before He moves. He's running toward you in the depression, in the sin struggle, in the mess, just like the father ran to the prodigal who still smelled like the pig pen.
