"I need to hide my depression because Christians are supposed to be joyful."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone at church is always talking about joy and victory. If I tell them I can barely get out of bed some days, they'll think I'm a bad Christian. I have to keep smiling and pretend everything is fine or they'll judge me.
"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Religious performance culture that demands fake joy instead of honest relationship, creating isolation in suffering.
He sees social media posts of Christians looking happy and victorious. Admitting depression feels like admitting spiritual failure in a culture that equates faith with constant happiness.
Jeremiah, God's chosen prophet, cursed the day of his birth and wished he had died in the womb. God didn't rebuke his depression but continued calling him 'beloved' and using him powerfully despite his overwhelming emotional pain.
I REFUSE the lie that I must hide my depression to be acceptable to God or His people. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted, not distant from them. My honesty about pain doesn't disqualify me from His presence. I am not required to perform joy I don't feel. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, fully loved in every emotional state. The BARAK blessing of Abraham rests on me by covenant, not by mood. I am blessed when I mourn because comfort is already mine. I stand in grace, not performance.
The Father isn't waiting for you to smile before He embraces you - He's running toward your broken heart with tenderness. While religious people demand you fake joy, the Father is drawing CLOSER because of your pain, not despite it.
