"This illness is punishment for past sin or generational curse."
How it sounds in your head: My grandfather had this. Maybe it's in my bloodline. Or maybe it's that season of rebellion—God's getting back at me. The affair, the addiction years, the wasted decade. This is the consequence. I brought this on myself.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Old Covenant punishment theology applied to New Covenant believers; generational curse teaching that ignores Christ's finished work.
There's family medical history that makes genetic curse feel real. There's past sin that makes punishment feel deserved. Cause-and-effect feels logical—I sinned, now I suffer. Religious teaching about generational curses and reaping what you sow reinforces guilt. His past feels like it's catching up in his thirties.
Disciples asked Jesus, 'Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?'—same question you're asking. Jesus' answer: 'NEITHER this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.' Then He healed him. Your sickness isn't punishment; it's a setup for God's GLORY in healing.
I REFUSE the lie that sickness is punishment for sin. IT IS WRITTEN that God has forgiven ALL my trespasses and NAILED every charge to the cross—there is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ. The man born blind wasn't sick because of sin—neither his nor his parents'—but for God's glory in healing. IT IS WRITTEN in Galatians 3:13 that Christ REDEEMED me from EVERY CURSE—generational, personal, all of it. The blood of Jesus speaks BETTER THINGS than the blood of Abel—it doesn't cry for vengeance, it declares MERCY. The BARAK blessing covered Abraham's LIES, Jacob's DECEPTION, Judah's IMMORALITY—if it protected them under the old covenant, how much MORE does Christ's blood cover me under the NEW? I am not under punishment; I am under FAVOR. Every generational curse is BROKEN at the cross.
The Father doesn't see your past and send sickness as payback—He sees Christ's blood and runs toward you with the robe that covers EVERY failure, the ring that restores FULL authority despite your history, and sandals that crush the enemy who's trying to use your past against you. The prodigal REEKED of sin and got a FEAST, not punishment.
