"This illness is my thorn in the flesh like Paul had."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone quotes Paul's thorn when I ask for prayer. 'God said My grace is sufficient'—so does that mean I just live with this? Maybe some people are chosen to stay sick to stay humble, and I'm one of them.
"And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure."
-- 2 Corinthians 12:7Source: Religious misinterpretation that turns Paul's messenger of Satan into God's gift.
It's printed in Bibles with Paul's name on it, so it sounds unchallengeable. When healing doesn't come instantly, the 'thorn' doctrine gives a spiritual-sounding reason to stop asking.
Paul's fellow worker got sick 'almost unto death,' and Paul said God had MERCY on him by healing him. If sickness were God's teaching tool, Paul would've said 'God kept him sick for humility'—instead he celebrated the MERCY of healing as God's will.
I REFUSE the lie that God partners with Satan's messenger to keep me sick. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul's thorn was persecution from PEOPLE, not disease from heaven—a messenger of Satan to buffet him, not a germ from God to humble him. Paul got stoned and beaten; he didn't call pneumonia his thorn. My Father doesn't give sickness as spiritual jewelry to keep me humble; He gives HEALTH as covenant inheritance to keep me strong. IT IS WRITTEN that by His stripes I WAS healed—past tense, purchased, mine. The BARAK blessing covers me because I'm in Christ, and that blessing means LIFE not disease. I receive healing NOW because mercy is God's response to sickness, not acceptance.
Your Father isn't handing you a disease diploma and calling it humility training. He's handing you the healer Himself, Jesus, who never once said 'keep your sickness'—He only said 'BE WHOLE.'
