"They had to raise themselves because I didn't know how to guide them."
How it sounds in your head: You didn't have good fathering modeled, so you didn't know what to do. You left them to figure things out alone—relationships, decisions, life direction. They stumbled through without guidance because you had none to give. You failed the fundamental job of a father.
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
-- James 1:5Enemy using lack of modeling to convince him children are permanently disadvantaged by his ignorance.
He genuinely didn't know how to guide because he wasn't guided. His children's struggles feel like proof they needed what he couldn't provide, and the gap seems insurmountable now.
Solomon felt like 'a little child' who didn't know how to lead when he became king. He asked for wisdom, and God gave it INSTANTLY and LIBERALLY—he became the wisest man in history in one encounter, proving God supplies wisdom that wasn't modeled.
I REFUSE the lie that my children are permanently disadvantaged by my lack of guidance. IT IS WRITTEN that God gives wisdom LIBERALLY and WITHOUT REPROACH—to me AND to them. Where I couldn't guide, HE guides. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 32:8, 'I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye'—that's God's promise to my children. The BARAK blessing includes DIVINE GUIDANCE that transcends human parenting. My kids have access to the Wonderful Counselor Himself, and His guidance is perfect where mine was absent. He fathers the fatherless, and that includes filling gaps in imperfect fathering.
Your Father sees you grieving the guidance you couldn't give and wants you to know: He's BEEN guiding your children all along, and He's inviting you into present conversations where His wisdom flows through you NOW. It's never too late to ask Him for the words they need to hear—He gives liberally, without reminding you of past silence.
