"Therapy is just for people who don't have Jesus or don't pray enough"
How it sounds in your head: Some people at church say counseling is worldly wisdom and Christians just need the Bible. If I go to therapy, people will think I'm not spiritual or that I've given up on God. Maybe I should just try harder to pray and read my Bible more.
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."
-- Proverbs 11:14Religious teaching that pits professional help against faith, as if using tools God provides through psychology is choosing the world over God.
He heard someone say 'the Bible is the only counselor you need' and now therapy feels like admitting Scripture isn't sufficient. Going to a counselor feels like betraying Jesus or proving his faith is too weak.
Naaman wanted a dramatic healing from Elisha but the prophet told him to just wash in a river seven times—seemed too simple, too 'worldly.' Naaman almost missed his miracle by rejecting the practical method God provided. He humbled himself, did the simple thing, and was healed instantly.
I REFUSE the lie that therapy contradicts faith. IT IS WRITTEN that in the multitude of counselors there is safety—God DESIGNED us to need help from others, including trained professionals. Seeking therapy is WISDOM, not weakness; it's humility, not heresy. IT IS WRITTEN that God gave humans knowledge and skill (Exodus 31:3)—therapists' training is part of His provision. I am FULLY RIGHTEOUS in Christ whether I go to therapy or not. The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine—God provided for Isaac through wells DUG BY OTHERS, and He provides for me through counselors trained by His knowledge. I receive ALL the tools God offers with gratitude.
The Father sees you considering therapy and He's not disappointed—He's the one who placed that therapist in your city and gave them their education. He's celebrating your courage to get help, not judging your faith.
