"The suffering is refining me and making me more like Christ—I shouldn't resist it."
How it sounds in your head: The pastor preached about the refiner's fire. The women's Bible study says suffering produces perseverance. If I resist this disease, am I resisting God's sanctification process? Maybe fighting for healing is actually fighting against His purposes to shape me into Jesus' image.
"Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you WERE healed."
-- 1 Peter 2:24Religious teaching making suffering redemptive and disease sanctifying, confusing Christ's suffering on the cross with Christians' suffering in the world.
She's been discipled to see all hardship as divine curriculum and to distrust comfort as potentially carnal. Embracing suffering feels spiritually mature, while resisting it feels selfish.
Religious tradition says Paul's 'thorn in the flesh' was sickness to keep him humble. But the TEXT says it was 'a messenger of Satan to buffet me'—an demonic assignment, NOT a divine tool. God's response wasn't 'embrace the thorn' but 'My GRACE is sufficient'—the same grace that raised the dead, opened blind eyes, and cast out demons. Grace OVERCOMES thorns; it doesn't sanctify them.
I REFUSE the lie that disease is God's sanctifying tool. IT IS WRITTEN: 'By whose stripes you WERE healed'—past tense, finished at the cross. Jesus suffered so I don't have to. I am not made like Christ by being SICK; I'm made like Him by being RIGHTEOUS, and I already am because of the cross. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul's thorn was a messenger of SATAN, not a gift from God, and God's response was 'My GRACE is sufficient'—the same grace that heals, delivers, and resurrects. Refining fire is the Spirit burning lies out of my mind, not disease burning my body. I am a branch connected to the Vine, and the fruit He produces in me comes from CONNECTION, not DISEASE. I resist this sickness in Jesus' name because HE resisted it—healing everyone who came to Him. That's my model.
The Father isn't refining you with cancer—He refined you at the cross and declared you righteous by blood. He's running toward you with the robe of right standing, not a justification for your suffering, because He already suffered so you could live ABUNDANTLY, not barely.
