"Real Christians should be able to overcome depression without therapy or medication."
How it sounds in your head: My small group leader said the Bible is the only counselor we need. I feel broken that I can't just 'rejoice in the Lord always' out of my depression. Maybe if I read my Bible more, I wouldn't need a therapist.
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."

She sees verses about joy and peace everywhere while she can barely get out of bed. Church culture celebrates people who 'overcame' without professional help.
Elijah was so depressed he wanted to die after his greatest victory. God didn't rebuke him or tell him to read Scripture more—He gave him food, rest, and an angel to care for him physically before addressing anything else.
I REFUSE the lie that depression means I'm not a real Christian. IT IS WRITTEN that in the multitude of counselors there is safety, and therapy is WISDOM. I am NOT spiritually broken because my brain needs help. IT IS WRITTEN that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and that includes me with depression. I am Abraham's seed, blessed and highly favored, and the BARAK protects me even when I can't feel it. I receive help—therapy, medication, whatever I need—without shame.
Your Father sees your depression and He's not disappointed—He's running toward you with professional help, brain chemistry support, and His presence all at once. He sent an angel to feed Elijah in his depression, and He's sending help to you right now because that's who He is.
