"Real Christians overcome mental illness through prayer alone, not therapy."
How it sounds in your head: I've been praying about my anxiety for months and it's not going away. Maybe I'm not praying right, or maybe therapy is just for people who don't know how to pray. Going to a counselor feels like admitting prayer doesn't work.
"Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established."
-- Proverbs 15:22Religious lie creating false dichotomy between spiritual disciplines and professional mental health care.
He hears testimonies about prayer solving everything and fears that seeking therapy reveals prayer isn't enough. Using professional help feels like downgrading from God.
Timothy struggled with frequent stomach issues and anxiety. Paul didn't just tell him to pray harder - he gave practical medical advice to drink wine for his stomach. God addressed Timothy's physical needs practically while affirming his spiritual calling.
I REFUSE the lie that therapy contradicts prayer or faith. IT IS WRITTEN that in the multitude of counselors there is wisdom and safety. God provides healing through MANY streams - prayer, community, professional care, and medical intervention. I am not choosing therapy OVER God but receiving FROM God through trained helpers. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and seeking help doesn't diminish my righteousness. The BARAK blessing of Abraham includes provision for EVERY need, including mental health support. I walk in wisdom by accepting all the help God provides.
The Father isn't waiting for you to prove prayer is enough - He's sending you counselors, therapists, and helpers as answers TO your prayers. While religion creates impossible either/or choices, the Father is simply surrounding you with every resource you need, calling them all His gifts.
