"Real Christians don't struggle with depression or anxiety - something's wrong with your faith."
How it sounds in your head: You're sitting in youth group while everyone's hands are up worshiping, and you feel absolutely nothing. Just that heavy weight in your chest that won't leave. You fake the smile, mouth the words, but inside you're screaming 'what's wrong with me?' If God is real, if your faith meant anything, you wouldn't feel this empty.
"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance."
-- Psalm 42:5Religion teaching that mental health struggles equal spiritual failure, turning brain chemistry into a moral deficiency test.
You see other Christian guys posting victory posts, leading worship, seeming fine - while you can barely get out of bed some mornings. The church talks about 'joy' and 'peace' like they're one prayer away, but yours feels like it's buried under concrete.
Fresh off the greatest miracle victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah sat under a tree begging God to let him die - classic post-victory depression. God didn't rebuke him for weak faith; He sent an angel with food, let him sleep, and spoke in a gentle whisper.
I REFUSE the lie that my mental health struggle means God is disappointed in me. IT IS WRITTEN that even David and Elijah battled darkness while being used mightily by God. My brain chemistry doesn't change my blood-bought identity. The same Jesus who wept at Lazarus's tomb understands every tear I've cried in the dark. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ - not because I feel happy, but because His blood says so. The BARAK blessing of Abraham covers my mind, my emotions, my entire being - I am blessed coming in and going out, in the dark nights and the breakthrough mornings.
The Father isn't standing at a distance waiting for you to 'get your mental health together' before He loves you. He's running toward you in the depression, sitting with you in the anxiety, whispering 'you're still Mine' when the darkness feels permanent - just like He sent an angel to cook breakfast for suicidal Elijah.
