"Quitting or stepping back from ministry means I'm a failure and coward."
How it sounds in your head: Real warriors don't quit. You started this, you have to finish. Walking away is betrayal. Everyone will think you couldn't handle it. Your dad would be disappointed. God called you - how can you walk away? Quitters never win.
"Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work."
-- Acts 15:37-39Source: Religious obligation mixed with masculine shame that equates change with failure.
You've preached about perseverance. You've told others not to quit. Stepping back feels like proving everyone right who doubted you. The shame feels unbearable.
Jonah RAN from God's call, got swallowed by a fish, thrown up on a beach. God's response: 'Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah THE SECOND TIME' - instant grace, fresh assignment, complete restoration despite running away.
I REFUSE the lie that stepping back equals failure. IT IS WRITTEN that John Mark quit Paul's mission and later became USEFUL, even writing a GOSPEL. Jonah RAN from the call and God gave him a SECOND WORD. I am not defined by one season, one assignment, or one decision. IT IS WRITTEN in Philippians 1:6 that He who BEGAN the work will COMPLETE it - He's not done with me because I'm changing course. I declare that obedience sometimes looks like saying NO to what everyone expects. I am under the BARAK blessing that protected Jacob when he RAN from Laban.
The Father isn't condemning you for considering a change - He's inviting you to trust that He has MORE for you, not less. Like giving Jonah a second word after the whale, He's preparing a fresh assignment, not writing you off as a failure.
