"Planning for retirement is selfish when people are suffering"
How it sounds in your head: I hear about kids starving in other countries and people who can't afford medicine. If I think about saving money for when I'm old, I feel guilty. Shouldn't I give everything away to help people instead of keeping it for my future?
"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
-- 1 Timothy 5:8Religious guilt that pits personal stewardship against compassion, creating false choice
She's tender-hearted and exposed to missions appeals and global suffering. Her compassion is real, but she's been taught to feel guilty for having provision or planning ahead.
Joseph stored massive amounts of grain during abundance, planning for future famine years ahead. This wasn't selfishness - it saved Egypt and surrounding nations. His planning ahead enabled him to bless millions later.
I REFUSE the lie that planning for my future is selfish. IT IS WRITTEN that providing for my household is biblical obedience, not greed. My Father doesn't pit my provision against compassion - He provides abundantly for both. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed with the BARAK blessing that made people so wealthy they could rescue nations. Joseph stored grain and saved millions. Abraham had abundance and rescued cities. I reject false guilt. Stewarding provision for my future enables greater generosity later. I am the branch abiding in the vine - my fruit feeds others because I'm connected, not depleted.
Your Father is running toward you with such abundance that you'll provide for your future and give generously to others without conflict. He doesn't ask you to choose - He's the God of more than enough for every season and every compassionate impulse of your heart.
