"Once an addict, always an addict - I'll never be fully free."
How it sounds in your head: They told me in treatment that this is a lifelong disease, that I'll always be one bad day away from relapse. Even though I haven't touched it in forty years, they say I need to introduce myself as an addict for the rest of my life. Now I'm ninety and still saying those words, still identifying with something I haven't done since I was fifty.
"Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."
-- John 8:36The recovery industry profits from keeping people in perpetual victim status instead of declaring the complete victory Christ purchased.
Decades of 12-step language have programmed her to believe sobriety is managed, not completed. At ninety, after forty years clean, she still fears claiming total freedom might trigger a fall.
He practiced witchcraft, consulted mediums, sacrificed his own children to demons, and filled Jerusalem with innocent blood - the most evil king in Israel's history. When he finally cried out to God from prison, God IMMEDIATELY restored him, brought him back to Jerusalem, and he lived out his final years in complete freedom and blessing - no lifelong 'evil king in recovery' label.
I REFUSE the lie that I'll always be an addict! IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED - not partially, not conditionally, but COMPLETELY! I am not managing sobriety; I am WALKING in the freedom Jesus purchased with His blood! My forty years without that substance are not white-knuckle survival - they are PROOF that the old woman died and a new creation lives! IT IS WRITTEN that old things passed away - that includes the addict identity! I am the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God in Christ, and righteousness doesn't have a relapse waiting around the corner! The same BARAK blessing that kept Abraham prospered through his failures keeps me standing in total freedom!
Precious daughter, the Father is not nervously watching you, hoping you don't slip. He's celebrating you, already calling you FREE, already calling you WHOLE, already seeing you through the lens of His Son's completed work - not your past struggle.
