"Older believers are just bitter and trying to limit you with their cynicism."
How it sounds in your head: They tell you to 'be realistic' because they gave up on their dreams. Their caution is just projection of their own failures and disappointments. They're threatened by your faith and want you small like them. Their 'wisdom' is really just fear and regret dressed up.
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise."
-- Proverbs 12:15Enemy: Turns healthy counsel into perceived attack, isolating you from protective wisdom by reframing discernment as bitterness.
Some older believers DO sound cynical—they warn about pitfalls, urge caution, question your timelines. It DOES feel limiting when they don't match your enthusiasm. Some genuinely have given up and project that onto you. Discerning which is which feels impossible, so dismissing all feels safer.
Rehoboam rejected the elders' counsel as 'too soft,' listened instead to his young friends who told him what he wanted to hear, and his decision split the kingdom in half—instantly losing 10 of 12 tribes. Dismissing older wisdom as bitterness cost him most of his inheritance in one day.
I REFUSE the lie that all older counsel is bitterness. IT IS WRITTEN that he who heeds counsel is wise—some caution is protective wisdom, not limiting fear. Rehoboam lost ten tribes in a day by rejecting elders for peers. IT IS WRITTEN that in the multitude of counselors there is safety—I don't have to take ALL advice, but I don't dismiss ALL input either. The Holy Spirit gives me discernment to separate true wisdom from projection. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed and highly favored, the head and not the tail—and part of staying 'above only' is honoring wisdom that protects me from ditches others already fell into.
The Father places older voices around you not to cage your faith but to guard your future—He's running toward you with a TEAM of protectors, not waiting for you to prove you don't need anyone. He celebrates your bold faith while also surrounding you with those who've walked the minefield, throwing the party with both your peers AND the elders who kept wine flowing at Cana.
