"My sexual history makes me damaged goods for marriage"
How it sounds in your head: I see the purity culture posts about 'worth waiting for' and know I already gave away what I was supposed to save. Every guy I date will eventually ask about my past, and when they find out the number, I'll see it in their eyes—the recalculation of my value. I'm the used car next to the brand new model.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: Purity culture weaponizing virginity as currency and reducing women to their sexual history
The 'chewed gum' and 'crumpled rose' analogies from youth group are burned into your memory, and every message about marriage celebrates the bride who 'saved herself.' Your body remembers what you wish your mind could forget, and shame feels like the realistic response.
This woman had five husbands and was currently living with a man she wasn't married to—the entire town knew her sexual history and she came to the well at noon to avoid their stares. Jesus not only spoke to her publicly (scandalous), but made her the FIRST EVANGELIST—she brought the whole city to Him that same day.
I REFUSE the lie that my sexual past makes me damaged goods. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION—old things have PASSED AWAY and ALL things have become new, including my purity before God. The enemy wants me to wear my history like a scarlet letter, but God has clothed me in robes of RIGHTEOUSNESS that have nothing to do with my virginity and everything to do with HIS. IT IS WRITTEN in Isaiah 61:10 that He covers me with garments of salvation and robes of righteousness like a bride adorned for her husband. I am not disqualified from a godly marriage—I am the BARAK-blessed daughter of Abraham, and what God has made clean, no man can call unclean. My worth was never in my body count; it's in my BLOOD covering.
The Father doesn't see a damaged bride—He sees a daughter He's been preparing a feast for, and He's already picked out your wedding dress. The man He has for you won't be calculating your past; he'll be celebrating the NEW CREATION standing before him.
