"My parents' divorce proves I come from a broken home and I'll fail at relationships too."
How it sounds in your head: I don't even know what a healthy marriage looks like. How can I not repeat what I saw? The statistics say kids from divorced homes are more likely to divorce. I'm probably doomed to repeat the cycle.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
-- Jeremiah 29:11Generational curse lie plus statistics becoming prophecy in impressionable mind during identity formation.
You literally watched love die. You heard the fighting, saw the lawyers, lived in two houses. You don't have a model for 'till death do us part'—you have a model for giving up.
God told him to marry a prostitute who would betray him—worst possible marital situation. Yet through it, Hosea demonstrated the most profound picture of covenant love in Scripture. God redeemed the WORST marriage scenario for His glory.
I REFUSE the lie that my parents' divorce determines my relational future. IT IS WRITTEN that God has thoughts of PEACE toward me, giving me a future and a HOPE. I am NOT cursed to repeat cycles—I am BLESSED to break them. The BARAK covenant is on my life: blessed in relationships, blessed in my future family, blessed in covenant love. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that I am a NEW creation—old patterns have NO POWER. I will have a marriage that glorifies God because HE is my model, not my past.
The Father isn't looking at your parents' marriage and predicting yours. He's looking at YOU in Christ and seeing covenant love, faithfulness, and a marriage that will make people believe in forever again.
