"My pain is too much. If people knew how much I'm struggling, they'd walk away."
How it sounds in your head: You're drowning—grief from losses, depression that won't lift, anxiety that steals sleep, trauma you've carried for decades. You paste on a smile at church because you believe there's a limit to how much pain people will tolerate. You're terrified that if you let anyone see the real depth of your struggle, they'll decide you're too broken, too damaged, too much work.
"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Source: Religious culture that demands 'victory' testimonies while shaming honest struggle, feeding enemy's lie that pain disqualifies you.
You've seen how people respond to suffering—the awkward silences, the Christian clichés, the way friends slowly drift away from those who don't 'get better' fast enough. You're exhausted from pretending, but you're more terrified of being abandoned if you stop.
She was 'a sinner'—likely a prostitute—who came to Jesus weeping so hard her tears washed His feet, so broken she couldn't speak, just sobbed and poured perfume on Him. The religious people were disgusted, but Jesus DEFENDED her, forgave her INSTANTLY, and told her: 'Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.'
I REFUSE the lie that my pain makes me too much. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted—He doesn't run from my struggle, He runs TOWARD it. The woman with the alabaster jar came so broken she could only weep, and Jesus defended her and gave her peace INSTANTLY. IT IS WRITTEN that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. I am wrapped in the BARAK blessing that covers my emotional health, my mental health, my broken places. I am not too much—I am the BELOVED daughter He's been pursuing my whole life, and my pain doesn't disqualify me, it positions me for His NEARNESS.
The Father isn't intimidated by the depth of your pain—He's been with you IN it, holding you through every moment, weeping with you. He's not waiting for you to pull yourself together; He's pulling you close right now, in the mess, and whispering that you're safe, you're loved, you're His.
