"My mental health struggles are punishment for past sins I haven't dealt with."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe this depression is God's way of making me face what I did in my twenties. Everyone says unconfessed sin blocks blessings. Perhaps I'm reaping what I sowed decades ago.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religion teaches mental illness as divine retribution, turning brain chemistry into a karmic consequence system.
She's heard sermons about generational curses and hidden sin causing suffering. Her mind races through past mistakes, wondering which one triggered this darkness.
Mephibosheth was crippled, hiding in fear, certain he deserved nothing because of his family's past. David restored EVERYTHING instantly—land, wealth, permanent place at the king's table—not because he earned it but because of covenant.
I REFUSE the lie that mental illness is punishment for past sins. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus nailed ALL trespasses to the cross—past, present, future—and there is NO condemnation. My brain chemistry is not a karma system. I am Abraham's seed, blessed by covenant even when Abraham lied repeatedly. The BARAK protected murderers and deceivers because it was based on promise, not behavior. IT IS WRITTEN that I am forgiven of ALL trespasses. My depression is biology, not divine retribution. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and the blood covers what my mind tries to dredge up.
The Father isn't punishing you with mental illness for old sins—He's already forgotten them, thrown them as far as the east is from the west. He's running toward you with healing, not holding your past as leverage for suffering.
