"My independent, self-reliant nature is pride—I should need people more and be more vulnerable."
How it sounds in your head: You've always been the guy who figures it out, handles it, doesn't need rescuing—and Christian culture says that's pride and lack of community. Maybe your independence is really just fear of intimacy disguised as strength.
"Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
-- Philippians 4:11-13Codependent church culture that mistakes healthy independence for isolation and self-sufficiency for pride.
Every sermon on 'we need each other' and 'community' makes you feel like your ability to function independently is spiritual deficiency. You wonder if you're too self-reliant to truly need God or people.
God sent Elijah to the Brook Cherith ALONE—no community, no accountability group, just Elijah and God. Ravens brought food, God provided water, and Elijah emerged with POWER to confront nations. His solitary season wasn't isolation; it was PREPARATION.
I REFUSE the lie that independence is pride. IT IS WRITTEN: I have learned to be CONTENT in every state—my ability to stand alone is STRENGTH, not sin. I am not isolated; I am SECURE in Christ. IT IS WRITTEN: Each shall bear his own load—I am not too self-reliant; I am RESPONSIBLY STRONG. God sent Elijah alone to the brook and he emerged with POWER. My independence isn't fear of intimacy; it's FREEDOM from codependency. The BARAK blessing rests on me in community AND in solitude.
The Father isn't disappointed in your independence—He's proud of a son who can stand alone with Him. He's running toward your self-reliance saying 'You don't need rescuing; you need EQUIPPING—and I've already given it.'
