"My independent personality meant I never learned to need God or people"

How it sounds in your head: I've always been self-reliant—figured things out myself, didn't ask for help, prided myself on independence. But now I can't even dress myself some days. Maybe God is humbling me because I never learned dependence. My whole personality was built on self-sufficiency, and that's the opposite of what God wanted. I should have been needier all along.

Deuteronomy 8:18

"And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day."

-- Deuteronomy 8:18
Enemy whispers: Your independence was pride God had to break. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Deuteronomy 8:18 - 'It is He who gives you POWER to get wealth.' God GAVE you that capacity for self-sufficiency! Your independence wasn't rebellion—it was GIFTING. You didn't avoid God by being competent; you EXPRESSED God by stewarding strength well. Your current dependence isn't punishment for past independence—it's just biology, not judgment.
Quick Truth: LIE: Independence was pride. TRUTH: God gives POWER to prosper—competence is His gift, not rebellion (Deut 8:18)

Religion teaches that strength is sinful and dependence is spiritual, shaming your self-reliance as pride instead of recognizing it as God-given capacity.

Why this feels true:

You built a career, fixed your own house, solved your own problems—and now you need help toileting and it feels like cosmic payback for a lifetime of independence. The caregivers have to do everything, and your inability to do it yourself feels like God finally breaking the pride He always hated in you.

Exodus 31:2-5
Bezalel

God filled Bezalel with His Spirit specifically to be SKILLED, COMPETENT, and ABLE—to work independently in craftsmanship without needing constant supervision. His self-reliance in building the tabernacle wasn't lack of dependence on God; it WAS dependence on God expressed as competence, and God celebrated it.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that my independence was pride. IT IS WRITTEN: The LORD gave me POWER to get wealth and capacity to solve problems—my self-reliance was His GIFT, not my rebellion. I didn't avoid needing God; I EXPRESSED God through competence. My strength served my family for eight decades, and current physical limitations aren't punishment for past independence—they're just biology. IT IS WRITTEN: God filled Bezalel with ability to work independently, and He filled me the same way. I carry the BARAK blessing, and my self-sufficiency was the FRUIT of connection to the Vine, not separation from it.

But God actually:

The Father isn't punishing your strength with weakness—He's celebrating that you carried what weaker men couldn't, and now He's carrying YOU. He's saying, 'You held everyone up for 80 years; now let Me hold you, not as judgment but as REWARD for faithfulness.'
