"My family's history of abuse means I'll become an abuser too."
How it sounds in your head: Your dad hit your mom. His dad hit his mom. You're starting to feel that rage. The counselors say abused kids become abusers. You're terrified you'll hurt someone you love. The cycle feels unbreakable.
"As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."
-- Psalm 103:12Source: Psychological models that emphasize patterns while minimizing the transformative power of the Holy Spirit.
You've witnessed violence your whole life. You notice yourself getting aggressive. The stats say you're likely to repeat the pattern. The cycle feels like fate written in your family's scars.
Joseph's brothers beat him, threw him in a pit, and sold him into slavery. Textbook trauma. Instead of becoming an abuser, he became a savior. When he had the power to destroy them, he said, 'You meant evil, but God meant it for good.' No bitterness. No retaliation. Trauma didn't determine his treatment of others. He broke the cycle INSTANTLY by choosing blessing over vengeance.
I REFUSE the lie that I'll become an abuser because I witnessed abuse. IT IS WRITTEN that God removed my father's violence from me as far as the east is from the west—INFINITE DISTANCE. I do not carry his rage. I carry the Spirit of POWER, LOVE, and a SOUND MIND. IT IS WRITTEN in Galatians 5:22 that the fruit of the Spirit is GENTLENESS and SELF-CONTROL. That fruit is growing in me automatically because I'm attached to Christ. Joseph went from pit to palace and blessed the very brothers who tried to destroy him. Trauma did not determine his treatment of others. I am not my father's son in violence—I am the Father's son in MERCY. The cycle is BROKEN.
The Father is not watching you with suspicion, waiting to see if you'll hit someone. He's already placed His Spirit of gentleness inside you. He's not preparing an intervention—He's preparing a testimony of how you DIDN'T become what everyone predicted.
