"My exhaustion is punishment for not taking better care of myself earlier in life."
How it sounds in your head: You replay decades of poor sleep, stress from raising kids, skipping meals to serve everyone else. Now you're tired and you believe you're reaping consequences—this is your fault for not doing self-care when it mattered.
"Through the LORD's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
-- Lamentations 3:22-23Religious karma lie mixed with maternal guilt, making present suffering payment for past imperfection.
You CAN trace genuine connections between past stress and present fatigue, and the 'you reap what you sow' teaching has been weaponized to make you feel your exhaustion is earned judgment.
Hezekiah was sick unto death—Isaiah told him to set his house in order because he would die. Hezekiah prayed, and before Isaiah left the courtyard, God turned him around with a message: 'I have HEARD your prayer, I have SEEN your tears; I will HEAL you, and I will ADD fifteen years to your life.' Instant reversal.
I REFUSE the lie that my exhaustion is punishment for past imperfection or that I'm reaping judgment for not being perfect in my younger years. IT IS WRITTEN that His mercies are NEW every morning—not dependent on yesterday's performance. Christ redeemed me from the CURSE; I don't walk under consequences, I walk under BLESSING. There is NO condemnation for me in Christ Jesus—not for past stress, not for imperfect choices, not for anything. IT IS WRITTEN that as far as the east is from the west, He has removed my transgressions—including every self-care failure I'm mentally cataloging. God isn't punishing me; He's RESTORING me.
The Father isn't reviewing your life with a disappointed sigh about what you should have done differently—He's running toward you with fresh mercy that's NEW THIS MORNING, celebrating that His compassion isn't earned by perfect self-care. While you were still blaming yourself, He already canceled the debt and called you blameless.
