"My divorce proved I failed God and disqualified me from His best."
How it sounds in your head: I broke my vows. 'Till death do us part' and I walked away—or she did. Either way, I'm responsible as the man, as the leader. Churches won't let divorced men lead. How can God use someone who couldn't keep the most basic covenant?
"Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also."
-- Jeremiah 3:8Source: Religion elevates divorce to super-sin status, ignoring that God Himself gave a certificate of divorce to Israel (Jer 3:8) and Jesus died to bring her BACK.
The failure of his marriage feels like THE defining failure—especially for a man whose identity was provider and protector. Church culture often treats divorced people as second-class, barred from leadership or full acceptance. At seventy, looking back, the divorce stands as proof he couldn't handle the most important relationship.
This woman had FIVE failed marriages and was living with a sixth man—serial relational wreckage, village scandal, drawing water alone to avoid judgment. Jesus made her His first preacher to an entire city, launching a revival—never mentioning a waiting period, restoration process, or proving herself. She went from six failed relationships to effective evangelist in one conversation.
I REFUSE the lie that divorce permanently disqualified me from God's best. IT IS WRITTEN that God Himself divorced Israel yet pursued her with relentless love, sending Jesus to die for restoration. The woman with five failed marriages became an evangelist to her city the SAME DAY she met Jesus—no probation, no proving herself. My marital failure doesn't change my position as a son. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ, not based on my marriage success but on His finished work. Under the BARAK, Abraham passed his wife off as his sister TWICE—still blessed. My covenant in Christ is BETTER.
The Father isn't reviewing your marriage certificate to determine your value—He's reminding you that you're a son, not a failure. Jesus chose a five-time divorcee as His first preacher and invited a cursing denier to lead His church—your relational wreckage doesn't disqualify you from purpose.
