"My accent makes people think I'm less intelligent or less American."
How it sounds in your head: When you speak, people smirk or ask you to repeat yourself. They slow down their speech like you're stupid. Classmates mimic your pronunciation. Your ideas get dismissed until someone with the 'right' accent says the same thing.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance... And they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, 'Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?'"
-- Acts 2:4-8Enemy using linguistic diversity as weapon to silence voice instead of celebrating multilingual gift.
She's literally been talked over, corrected condescendingly, or had her English tested despite being fluent. The social hierarchy at school makes the American accent the 'smart' one.
Moses said 'I am slow of speech and slow of tongue'—literally had a speech impediment. God's response wasn't speech therapy but 'I WILL BE WITH YOUR MOUTH and teach you what to say,' then used him to confront Pharaoh and deliver a nation INSTANTLY at the Red Sea.
I REFUSE the lie that my accent diminishes my intelligence or value. IT IS WRITTEN that God gave people different tongues and it was celebrated as a GIFT of the Spirit. My multilingual ability is a strength—I carry more than one language, more than one perspective. IT IS WRITTEN that God will be with my mouth and teach me what to say. I am not less American, less smart, or less heard. The BARAK blessing doesn't require perfect pronunciation. My voice matters exactly as it is.
The Father isn't waiting for you to sound different—He delights in the exact sound of YOUR voice, accent included, which carries the beauty of multiple worlds. He's been listening eagerly since before you could speak any language.
