"Mom's depression is now my depression—mental illness runs in families"
How it sounds in your head: She's been sad my whole life. Now I feel it creeping in. The same heavy darkness, the same can't-get-out-of-bed mornings. The doctor said it's genetic. I'm next in line.
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."
-- Isaiah 53:5Medical system combining with enemy to make biology destiny, ignoring the power of new birth and Christ's life in you
You've watched her struggle your entire childhood, and now you recognize similar feelings. Science says mental illness is hereditary, so it feels medically inevitable.
12 YEARS of bleeding, spent all her money on doctors who made her WORSE, medical system said incurable. One touch of Jesus' garment and she was IMMEDIATELY healed—Jesus said 'Daughter, your faith has made you well'—present tense, instant, complete.
I REFUSE the lie that my mother's depression is my destiny. IT IS WRITTEN that by Jesus' stripes I WAS healed—past tense, finished work. I am not a carrier of generational mental illness; I am a carrier of the MIND OF CHRIST. Depression is part of the curse Jesus became for me on the cross. I have been redeemed from confusion, madness, and darkness into the Kingdom of His marvelous LIGHT. IT IS WRITTEN that I have the Spirit of power, love, and a SOUND MIND. The BARAK blessing that came upon me in Christ includes divine health in my mind, emotions, and body. My mother's struggle does not define my future—Christ's finished work does.
The Father doesn't see you as 'pre-depressed,' waiting for the genetic shoe to drop. He sees you carrying HIS LIFE, HIS JOY, HIS PEACE—not because you're fighting off your mom's condition, but because you're a branch attached to the Vine who IS those things.
