"Jesus was poor, so if I follow Him, I should embrace poverty and struggle financially."
How it sounds in your head: You hear 'Jesus had nowhere to lay His head' and think that means God wants you broke. Looking at student loans, thinking about your future career, wanting to provide well someday—it all feels wrong, like you're not surrendered enough. 'True disciples sacrifice everything, including financial stability.'
"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich."
-- 2 Corinthians 8:9Source: Religion romanticizing poverty, ignoring that Jesus had a treasurer (Judas), was supported by wealthy women, and wore clothes valuable enough for soldiers to gamble over.
The 'broke missionary' narrative is everywhere—if you're not suffering financially, you must not be serious about Jesus. Every sermon about sacrifice seems to target your bank account, making financial wisdom feel like lack of faith.
Joseph went from prison to Prime Minister in ONE DAY—Pharaoh gave him a signet ring, fine clothes, a gold chain, and made him second-in-command over all Egypt. God took him from a cell to a palace INSTANTLY because promotion is God's nature.
I REFUSE the lie that Jesus' temporary poverty means I should live broke. IT IS WRITTEN: 'Though He was rich, yet He became poor, that I through His poverty might become RICH.' Jesus TOOK my poverty at the cross so I could walk in HIS provision. He wore my lack for 33 years so I could wear His abundance forever. IT IS WRITTEN in Galatians 3:13-14—'Christ redeemed us from the curse that the blessing of Abraham might come upon us.' The BARAK blessing of overflow, provision, and financial favor is MINE through Christ's finished work. I am the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, blessed in my career, my income, and my future. Financial abundance is my INHERITANCE.
Your Father didn't send Jesus to model poverty—He sent Him to BEAR your poverty so you'd never have to. While you're feeling guilty about wanting financial stability, the Father is celebrating that you're receiving what Jesus PAID FOR you to have—the blessing of Abraham, which includes wealth.
