"I've struggled with the same sin for decades, so God must be done with me by now."
How it sounds in your head: You've confessed this same thing a thousand times. You've tried accountability, counseling, prayer, fasting. You're in your sixties and STILL dealing with this—lust, anger, pride, whatever it is. Surely God's patience has run out. Surely there's a limit to how many times He'll forgive the same failure. You've used up your grace allotment.
"Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
-- Lamentations 3:22-23Source: Religious teaching that puts limits on God's grace and makes forgiveness transactional instead of covenantal.
The sin keeps showing up despite decades of effort, which feels like proof that God has given up on you. If He was really with you, wouldn't this be gone by now?
Peter didn't just fail once—he denied Jesus THREE times after swearing he never would, and he did it the night Jesus needed him most. Yet Jesus didn't bench him. He didn't make him prove himself. He IMMEDIATELY restored him and gave him the keys to the kingdom. First conversation after resurrection: full restoration.
I REFUSE the lie that God's patience with me has expired. IT IS WRITTEN: His compassions are NEW EVERY MORNING. There is no grace allotment I can exhaust. IT IS WRITTEN: Where sin abounded, grace abounded MUCH MORE. My repeat failures don't surprise God or disqualify me. The BARAK blessing covered Jacob's repeated deception. It covered Abraham's repeated lying. It covers MY repeated struggles because it's based on COVENANT, not my consistency. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, not because I finally got clean, but because HE is clean.
The Father isn't keeping a tally waiting for you to hit the limit—He's running toward you THIS MORNING with fresh mercy, not because you earned it by improving, but because that's who He is. Your struggle doesn't change His nature, and His nature is limitless compassion.
