"I've sinned against someone who died—I can never make it right now."

How it sounds in your head: I never apologized to my mom before she died. I can't fix what I said to him. The opportunity for reconciliation is gone and so is my peace.

Colossians 2:13-14

"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."

-- Colossians 2:13-14
Enemy whispers: 'You can never make it right—the person is gone.' BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Colossians 2:13-14—'He has forgiven you ALL trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, and nailed it to the cross.' The debt certificate is nailed to the cross—not filed away waiting for you to pay it. Your mother's death didn't make your forgiveness conditional on her hearing you apologize. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:33 'Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.' The only opinion that matters has already declared you forgiven.
Quick Truth: LIE: Can't make it right so can't be forgiven. TRUTH: Jesus made it right at the cross. ALL trespasses forgiven—debt certificate destroyed. (Colossians 2:13-14)

Works-based atonement that makes your apology necessary to complete forgiveness, when Jesus already completed it.

Why this feels true:

The person is gone and the conversation can never happen, leaving you with unresolved guilt that feels permanent. You're trying to earn closure through an action that's now impossible.

Luke 23:39-43
Thief on the cross

The thief had no time to make restitution to anyone he'd robbed, no chance to apologize to victims, no opportunity to repair any relationship. He simply believed, and Jesus said 'TODAY you will be with Me in paradise.' Forgiveness without opportunity for amends.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that I need to make amends to receive forgiveness. IT IS WRITTEN that ALL my trespasses are forgiven and the certificate of debt is nailed to the cross—not waiting for me to pay it. Jesus didn't say 'It is finished... once you apologize to everyone.' It IS finished. IT IS WRITTEN that I am justified freely by His grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus. The people I hurt are in God's hands—He can heal them in ways I never could. I release this burden to the cross where it belongs. Under the BARAK covenant, I walk in blessing, not in unpayable debt. I am free.

But God actually:

The Father doesn't keep your forgiveness in escrow waiting for you to complete an impossible task. The blood of Jesus didn't just cover the sins you could apologize for—it covered ALL of them, including the ones where the other person is beyond reach.
