"I've secretly resented and been jealous of others for decades; my heart is rotten at the core."
How it sounds in your head: I smile and congratulate people, but inside I'm seething with envy. For years I've resented friends' marriages, their children's success, their financial blessings. I'm a bitter, jealous woman at my core. No one knows how dark my thoughts really are. I'm a whitewashed tomb.
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
-- Ezekiel 36:26Enemy exploiting the reality of inner struggles to define core identity, ignoring the new heart promised in the New Covenant.
She's lived with these secret thoughts for so long they feel like her truest self, more real than the external persona she presents. At her age, the decades of jealousy feel like proof of permanent character rather than temporary struggle, and Jesus' 'whitewashed tomb' rebuke to Pharisees echoes in her condemnation.
Cain murdered his brother Abel out of jealousy because God accepted Abel's offering and not his—the ultimate jealousy-driven crime. Yet even after murdering his brother, God protected Cain with a mark and promised sevenfold vengeance on anyone who killed him, demonstrating that God's covenant protection covers even the most rotten-hearted jealousy-fueled sin.
I REFUSE the lie that jealousy defines my core identity. IT IS WRITTEN that God gave me a NEW heart and a new spirit—I don't have a renovated jealous heart, I have a completely new one. Cain murdered his brother out of jealousy and God STILL protected him with a mark. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that I am a new creation—old things passed away, ALL things became new. The jealousy is not my core; it's the death rattle of an old nature that no longer defines me. I have the heart of flesh, and the BARAK blessing over my life isn't blocked by bitter thoughts because grace covers what I can't control.
Your Father doesn't see a rotten core when He looks at you—He sees the new heart He placed inside you the moment you believed, and jealous thoughts are just old graffiti on a new building. Like Cain who murdered his brother in jealousy yet was marked for protection, your worst internal struggles can't disqualify you from covenant blessing because the BARAK was never based on a pure heart—it was based on a faithful God.
