"I'm too set in my ways. Nobody wants to deal with a grumpy old man who can't change."
How it sounds in your head: I know I'm rough around the edges. I've heard 'you're so stubborn' my whole life. Now I'm old and cranky on top of it. Who wants to befriend that? I am what I am, and it's too late to change.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Enemy condemnation using personality traits as disqualifiers—religion's lie that you must FIX yourself before you're worthy of connection, denying the transforming power of covenant grace.
Seventy years of patterns are hard to break, and he's more irritable than he used to be. The mirror shows a scowling face that matches his mood. His wife says he's gotten harder to live with, and he believes he's become the difficult old man everyone avoids.
Naaman was a proud, arrogant, angry military commander who nearly missed his healing because of his stubborn attitude—yet God healed him INSTANTLY anyway, not waiting for personality improvement. His healing came DESPITE his grumpiness, and his character changed AFTER, not before.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm too old and set in my ways for friendship. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION in Christ—old things PASSED AWAY. I am not defined by crankiness, stubbornness, or seventy years of patterns—I am defined by the BLOOD. The BARAK blessing that made Abraham a blessing DESPITE his lying makes me a blessing DESPITE my rough edges. IT IS WRITTEN there is NO CONDEMNATION to me in Christ—my personality quirks don't disqualify me. I am being transformed by His PRESENCE, not my effort. Fresh grace is making me NEW. I receive friendships that see CHRIST in me TODAY.
The Father doesn't see a grumpy old man—He sees His BELOVED SON in whom He is well pleased. He's not waiting for you to smooth your edges; He's sending people who will love you WHILE you're rough and watch you soften under the kindness of covenant love.
