"I'm destined to repeat my parents' mistakes because that's all I know how to do."
How it sounds in your head: I'm already yelling like Dad yelled. I'm already worrying about money like Mom. I catch myself doing exactly what I hate. It's inevitable—I'm becoming them.
"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."
-- Ezekiel 18:20Enemy using behavioral observation to establish false predestination, denying supernatural transformation power.
He hears his father's words coming out of his own mouth, feels his mother's anxiety rising in his chest. The learned behaviors are automatic, proving he's doomed to the same cycle.
Josiah's father Amon was a wicked king who worshiped idols; his grandfather Manasseh was literally the WORST king in Israel's history who sacrificed children and filled Jerusalem with innocent blood. Yet at age 8, Josiah 'did what was right in the sight of the LORD' and became the most reforming king ever—he didn't repeat one generational sin.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm destined to repeat my parents' mistakes. IT IS WRITTEN that the son shall NOT bear the guilt of the father. I am NOT a prisoner of my upbringing. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ has made me FREE from the law of sin and death—that includes generational sin. When I yell, it's not because 'that's all I know'—it's because I'm still learning who I AM in Christ. I am being transformed by the renewing of my mind. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I don't have to become a better version of my parents—I get to become the FULLNESS of who God created me to be, with NO reference to their failures.
The Father isn't watching you nervously, hoping you don't become your dad. He sees you as a COMPLETELY NEW person with Christ's nature inside you—the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is rewriting your reactions, your thoughts, your defaults, right now, without you straining or performing.
