"I'm an addict - that's who I am and will always be"
How it sounds in your head: Every time I introduce myself in that group, I say 'I'm an addict.' Every time someone asks about my past, that's the first word. Even when I'm not using, I'm still defined by what I used to do. It's tattooed on my identity.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: Recovery culture that replaces Christ's identity with addiction identity, making the problem permanent rather than the solution eternal.
He's heard 'once an addict, always an addict' so many times it sounds like scientific fact. Every support system reinforces this label as protection against relapse, making it feel dangerous to claim anything different.
Five failed marriages, living with man number six, entire town knew her as 'that woman' - identity was sexual brokenness and shame. One encounter with Jesus and she left her water pot (old identity), ran to the city, and became the first evangelist to Samaria - same day, new identity.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a new creation in Christ - old things PASSED AWAY. I am not 'recovering' - I am RECOVERED, REDEEMED, REMADE. My identity is not what I did but WHO LIVES IN ME. IT IS WRITTEN that I have been given the Abrahamic blessing - the same covenant protection that covered liars and deceivers covers me. I am a son of the Most High God, sealed with the Holy Spirit, and the enemy has NO LEGAL RIGHT to define me by my past. I walk in the BARAK blessing that cannot be reversed by my history.
The Father doesn't see you through the lens of what you did - He sees you through the blood of what Jesus did. Right now, while you're reading this, He's not waiting for you to prove you've changed - He's celebrating that you already HAVE in Christ, and He's running toward you with a new robe that has 'BELOVED SON' written on it, not 'ADDICT.'
