"I'm an addict — that's my identity forever"
How it sounds in your head: You've introduced yourself in meetings for years: 'I'm an alcoholic.' It's become your name. Even if you're clean 20 years, you'll always be defined by what you escaped. Your tombstone should read 'Addict.'
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW creation; old things have PASSED AWAY; behold, all things have become NEW."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Enemy/Recovery culture that replaces Christ's identity with sin identity, making the OLD man permanent instead of dead
Every meeting reinforces it — you say it out loud, everyone nods. The recovery industrial complex needs you to stay 'in recovery' forever, never fully free. Your entire social circle is built around this label.
Man so enslaved to demonic torment he lived naked in tombs, cutting himself, uncontrollable — entire community gave up on him. One encounter with Jesus and he's instantly 'clothed and in his right mind,' begging to follow Jesus, sent home as a missionary to ten cities.
I REFUSE the lie that 'addict' is my permanent identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION — old things PASSED AWAY. The man who was enslaved is DEAD and BURIED with Christ. I am not 'recovering' — I am RECOVERED, REDEEMED, MADE NEW. My identity is not what I escaped but WHO I'M IN — and I'm in CHRIST. IT IS WRITTEN that I have been crucified with Christ; it's no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The Abrahamic BARAK blessing rests on me — the same blessing that protected liars and deceivers protects ME, and I am being transformed from glory to glory. I am RIGHTEOUS, WHOLE, and FREE — not because I managed it, but because HE made me.
Father sees you the way He saw the Gadarene man AFTER deliverance — not as you were in the tombs. He's not waiting for you to prove you're 'really changed' — He RAN to you while you still smelled like the pigpen, put the robe on you, and declared: 'THIS is my son — NEW, CLEAN, MINE.'
