"I'll always be an addict - that's just who I am now"
How it sounds in your head: Every recovery meeting starts with 'Hi, I'm Sarah and I'm an addict.' Even when I'm clean, I have to wear this label. My Instagram bio might as well say 'former mess, current work in progress.' I'll never just be... free.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: Recovery culture's well-meaning identity labels that keep people bound to past instead of Christ's finished work
Every support system reinforces the label - meetings, sponsors, family who says 'she's doing better now' like waiting for relapse. The world celebrates 'days sober' because it doesn't know about instant new creation.
Five failed marriages, living with a man she wasn't married to, came to the well at noon to avoid judgment. One encounter with Jesus and she went from hiding in shame to running into town as an EVANGELIST - immediately.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction defines me. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION - old things PASSED AWAY the moment I believed. I am not 'Sarah the addict trying to stay clean.' I am SARAH THE RIGHTEOUS, branch connected to the Vine, producing fruit AUTOMATICALLY because Christ's life flows through me. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 6:6 that my old self was CRUCIFIED - past tense, DONE. I don't carry my past like a warning label. Under the BARAK blessing, I am BLESSED in my going out and coming in, ABOVE ONLY and not beneath. I declare: ADDICTION IS NOT MY IDENTITY. CHRIST IS.
Father sees you the way He saw the woman at the well AFTER her encounter - as an evangelist, not an addict. He's not keeping a sober day counter. He's celebrating that His daughter is FREE, running toward you with the ROBE of righteousness because you were NEVER defined by what you escaped.
